Utah Utes Gymnastics Schedule 2023 – If the first two weeks of the 2023 season established the high potential of the nation’s top programs, Week 3 exposed their weaknesses: Oklahoma and Auburn are the only top 10 teams to improve their Week 2 totals, while five others posted scores below 197 .Perhaps more significantly, this weekend highlighted the increasing parity among rankings, conferences and divisions, as a number of historically mid-ranked programs outperformed higher-ranked teams.
Of course, there will be some changes in the power rankings as teams experiment with lineups in search of their ideal top six, and this week was no exception with a mix of old and new faces in the mix. The third weekend of competition gives us a bit more to work with, but since hard data is scarce early on (and results rarely tell the whole story, anyway), we play with other variables – such as skill weight and competition. stakes – taking into account when we sharpen our choices.

Oklahoma started the first home meet of the season in epic fashion with a 49.650 rotation on vault to overtake Michigan as the top vault team in the country. The Sooners were less dominant in subsequent rotations, but avoided scoring anything below 9.775 and reasserted themselves as the team to beat in 2023.
Florida won its third straight of the season, but missed the electricity at home, managing just 197,325 against host Alabama. The vault continues to be an albatross for the Gators, currently averaging 49,250, with only Trinity Thomas averaging more than 9,900.
Utah finished third despite Oklahoma’s poor performance. The Utes posted an impressive 49.525 on vault, but struggled on the rest of the competition, including beam. To the team’s credit, he came through relatively unscathed despite posting a few points below 9.8.

Michigan is one of the few teams that could potentially challenge Oklahoma’s output in all four contests (the operative word being “potential”). After posting a blistering 198.125 in Week 2, the Wolverines barely trailed Big Ten rival Michigan State through three rotations due to uncharacteristic performances on the vault and beam, falling in the finals after a 48.925 on the beam. An early sub-49 beam score was quickly dismissed as a fluke, but these two are starting to look like a pattern.
Meanwhile, Auburn used its first home meet of 2023 by posting the SEC’s highest score this week to climb back into the power rankings. The Tigers have yet to break into the top 197, but remain one of the more consistent teams in the top tier.
The Bruins are holding onto the no. 6th place so far despite a poor match against Washington, but they need to sort out some kind of beam situation ASAP if they want to extend that streak: Fluctuations between 49,000 and 49,500 are not a sustainable long-term strategy.

In action: Michigan State defeated in-state rival Michigan for the first time since 2007 in front of a sold-out home arena. The Wolverines opened the door by an inch, and the Spartans threw it off its hinges.
Fans have rightly questioned the validity of Keri’s results from Weeks 2 and 3, but her double full score in Yurchenko is undoubtedly one of the best vaults she currently competes on. However, Brooks remained in first place despite being unchanged this week, as his playbook and overall technique were consistently cleaner than Carey’s.
Week 3 was a highlight for freshman Harris and junior Bryant. Hoppi landings are the only ones to keep their scores in the low 9.9s so far; take those deductions out of the equation like they did this week, and they jump right to the head of the class.

Bowers followed teammate Allie Stern’s incredible 9.975, nearly edging Yurchenko by one and a half and helping the Sooners surpass Michigan’s season mark of 49.650. In the next rotation, Utah’s Jadin Rucker showed why he’s the reigning national champion by one and a half pins on Yurchenko himself.

Wong’s score featured an awkward handstand at the end of his set, but his execution was meticulous to the point of absurdity. It wasn’t easy to beat 2022 national champion Thomas (especially with an apparently less-than-perfect routine), but Wong did.
Lee’s routine was his best of the season despite — or perhaps because of — the added pressure of an early lineup drop. His blind full stuck double-tuck in particular left no room for interpretation by the judges.
2020 Olympians Chiles and Lee continue to display near-elite difficulty with precision and talent. Lee struggled a bit to find a spot on his dismount, but not this week. From start to finish, this was his best set of the season.

Wojcik’s routine was noticeably uneventful from the start, but he was able to win and earn the Wolverines a useful point. We’ll consider this extraordinary until proven otherwise.
Honorable Mention: LIU’s Mara Titarsolej posted her third straight 9.9-plus score, which is even more impressive for her non-Power Five competition. Titarsolei looks set to return as an individual qualifier at the 2023 regionals.
Champion to watch: Selena Harris nailed her dismount routine, tying teammate Chiles’ 9.925 for a share of the event title.

Eaker is known for her superlative beauty on beam, but her third week after the fall was terrible. Anchor O’Keefe’s near-perfect routine not only ensured that the fall was thrown, but guaranteed that Utah would remain first in the national competition rankings.
Hu delivered a similar clutch routine, bouncing off a bar fall to salvage what threatened to be a disastrous beam rotation for Missouri.
LSU endured a rough start to the season — both with the schedule and with injuries — but Bryant handled the adversity like a champ. Ironically, beam has been her most consistent event this season.

Freshman DiCello wasted no time becoming an indispensable member of Florida’s ultra-competitive lineup: He was the only Gator — including fellow stars Trinity Thomas and Leann Wong — to score 9.9 points or higher this season.
Undisputed beam queen Illini Takekawa moved into last place in the power rankings after hitting a beauty in the routine that allowed the team to land a 9.050 and secure a narrow win over Rutgers.
Tribute: There’s clutch, and then there’s Arkansas freshman Cami Weaver. She made it three straight falls with a career-high 9.950, a season-high in either event for the Razorbacks.

Freshman to watch: Fisk freshman Aaliiah Reed-Hammon earned a share of the event title at the Tennessee Collegiate Classic. In addition to the first victory on beam for the new program, her 9.925 was the Bulldogs’ highest mark to date in any event.
There was no gold to go around, ending Thomas’ two-season streak of five perfect 10s on the floor. However, Thomas’ sublime technique and dramatic flair remain the gold standard for flooring.
Goburn closed out Auburn’s opener with his usual show stopper. Minor foot adjustments on his first and last passes prevented him from securing his first 10 of the season, but he still brought the crowd to its feet.

Campbell made good on the slightly under-rotated shots with his opening pass and never looked back. His undeniable charisma and incredible ability to score under pressure have kept him in the top half of the rankings.
Carey may be just shy of a perfect score, but it’s a better performance than last week’s usual 10: The landing of his opening Silivas is more controlled, and his overall power seems more assured and effortless.
Michigan’s floor rotation was a bright spot in a disappointing matchup against Michigan State, and Brooks’ routine was the best of the bunch. Big Ten gymnast Hooten made his first appearance in the 2023 power rankings with his first not-just-good-but-good floor of the season. He has yet to fully harness the power of his hidden full yin, but expect him to challenge the country’s upper echelon workers when he does.

Honorable mention: Sunisa Lee waited until Auburn’s home opener to unveil her new floor routine choreographed by teammate Gabby McLaughlin. His gamble was rewarded with 9,975 and the event title.
Champion to watch: Faith Torrez bounced back from a disappointing lunge last week to score a 9.950 and her second career title.
Thomas didn’t have the highest score all week, but he remained completely undefeated, recording his ninth straight total of 39.650
