The Scarlet Knights will open with three straight home games – Northwestern on September 2nd, Temple on September 9th and Virginia Tech on September 16th. Rutgers will have seven games at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, Middlesex County.

The game against Northwestern will be the first time the Scarlet Knights open the season at home against a Big Ten opponent since joining the conference. When Rutgers plays Virginia Tech, the game will be the first time the two teams have played in New Jersey since 2003.

The 2022 season was not a pleasant one for the Scarlet Knights, and coach Greg Schiano is looking forward to a fresh start. In an early look at the 2023 Rutgers football schedule, the Scarlet Knights are rewarded with seven home games this coming season, something Rutgers fans are excited to see.

If you look at Rutgers’ Big Ten games, most of their conference games are on the road. All five of Rutgers’ road games are against top Big Ten opponents, making them road contenders in 2023. If Coach Schiano wants to turn the tide of Rutgers football, he needs to win some road games, something they didn’t do well in 2022. Last season, Rutgers won two road games, both non-conference games.

Unlike Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State, the Scarlet Knights’ run to the Big Ten Championship may be limited. The upcoming season will be Schiano’s fourth consecutive season with the Scarlet Knights, and he still does not have a winning record. Early prediction: In 2023, Rutgers will host the Northwestern Wildcats in their opening week game. Last season, the Wildcats went 1-11 and won four games in the last two seasons. One of those four wins came against Rutgers in 2021, where the Wildcats beat the Scarlet Knights 21-7. The last time Rutgers hosted Northwestern, the Wildcats beat the Scarlet Knights 18-15. Rutgers’ Week 1 game will be the first Big Ten game for the 2023 Scarlet Knights, and will set the tone for the rest of the season.

Early Prediction: Rutgers will stay at home in their second week against the Temple Owls. Rutgers is riding a six-game winning streak against the Owls, dating back to 2003. Last season, the Scarlet Knights beat the Owls on the road 16-14. The last time Rutgers hosted Temple was in 2021, when the Scarlet Knights dominated the Owls 61-14.

Early Prediction: The Week 3 meeting at Rutgers will be the third straight home game for the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers will host Virginia Tech for another non-conference game. The last time Rutgers faced VT was in 2012 when the Hokies defeated the Scarlet Knights in overtime 13-10. Rutgers has had little success against Virginia Tech, winning just three games in school history. VT is riding a 12-game winning streak dating back to 1993.

Rutgers is also winless against the Wolverines on the road. The Rutgers matchup in Week 4 will be an uphill battle.

Early Prediction: The Scarlet Knights will return home for their Week 5 matchup against the Wagner Seahawks. The Rutgers matchup in Week 5 will be the last scheduled non-conference game in 2023. Last season, Rutgers scored a game-high 66 points against the Seahawks, something the Scarlet Knights would like to continue in 2023. This is a must-win for the Scarlet Knights as they prepare for a long stretch of Big Ten opponents.

Early Prediction: Rutgers’ game in week six will be on the road against the Wisconsin Badgers. Rutgers hasn’t beaten the Wisconsin Badgers since joining the Big Ten in 2014. The Scarlet Knights have played the Spartans tough over the years, making this an interesting game.
