Football Announces 2023 Schedule
North Dakota State University en route to winning the national title for the second year in a row in 2018 ended 15-0 for 7th overall. The Bison defeated Eastern Washington in the national championship game.
North Dakota State University lost many playmakers from last year and brought back just seven starters from its 2018 national championship team. Among the dropouts included 3-degree National Champion Eastern Stick, the all-time greatest quarterback in FCS history.
TY BROOKS: Brooks had 737 rushing yards and five touchdowns in 2018, making him a top returning rusher going into 2019. He had two 100+ yard games as a junior. This included a 103-yard and one touchdown day against Montana State University in the second round. FCS Playoffs. Brooks is part of a group of deep running backs that include redshirt freshman Saybane Clark and junior Adam Corfield.

JABRIL COX: Cox has been a dominant force in the Bison’s front 7, recording 9.5 tackles for loss in 2018, 4 sacks, 4 interceptions and a team-high 91 tackles. This junior linebacker was named an AP Second Team All-American. I placed 4th in last year’s Bag Buchanan prize race. He was named the Watchlist for the 2019 Baek Buchanan Awards preseason.
JAMES HENDRICKS: Hendricks was held safe last year as he ended up with 5 interceptions and a team-best 14 passes. He picked up two passes in the 2018 FCS playoffs, including one against Eastern Washington in the National Championship game.

North Dakota State University has had 39 NFL draft picks since 1965. The 13 former Bisons selected after 2004, NDSU’s inaugural season as an FCS program, are:
North Dakota State’s first national championship came in their second FCS playoff appearance, as the Bison finished second in the 20-team postseason bracket. NDSU lost only once a year in the penultimate game of the regular season against Youngstown State University and dominated the playoffs, receiving just 27 points in four games.
The defenseman shined the brightest in the national championship game, holding down top-seeded Sam Houston State University’s offense, scoring an FCS-high 39 points per game, and settling for two field goals. Linebacker Travis Beck was named Most Valuable Player after totaling seven tackles and an interception return for 63 yards.

On offense, NDSU quarterback Block Jensen ended up with two total touchdowns. That included a 1-yard rush score with 8:45 remaining in the 4th quarter to cool the game.

After being tied at 10 at halftime, NDSU outscored SHSU 29-3 last quarter. Jensen got a 1-yard score midway through the third quarter, putting the Bison in full lead. Running back Sam O’July (92 yards) also scored two touchdowns in the second half.

North Dakota State University had its first perfect season in the FCS era in 2013, going 15-0 and winning three straight games. NDSU became the first undefeated FCS champion since Marshall in 1996.

Top seeded Bison picked off seventh seed Tawson in the title game, scoring 28 unanswered points in the second quarter. Four other NDSU rushers scored touchdowns, with John Crockett (86 yards) and O’July (84 yards) setting the pace. Jensen completed 13 of 18 passes with two total touchdowns. He was named the game’s Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row.
“It’s getting better every time,” Jensen told reporters after the game, according to the Associated Press. “This was the last time I wore the bison jersey, but it was a fun ride.”
The championship game victory marked North Dakota State University’s 24-game winning streak and tied the record for the best in FCS’ history. That streak ends at 33 next season, ranking second to NDSU’s current 37-game winning streak going into 2020–21.

Carson Wentz took the reins from Jensen in 2014 following Jensen’s graduation, leading North Dakota State to an unprecedented fourth straight FCS championship. Wentz finished his first year as a starter with 3,111 yards passing, 25 passing touchdowns, and 6 rushing scores.

Three of second-seeded NDSU’s four playoff games were decided by a score, including a national championship game with 5-seeded Illinois State. The Bison trailed ISU 27-23 after two straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Wentz responded with a game-winning 5-yard touchdown run in 37 seconds to give NDSU a 29–27 victory.
North Dakota State University freshman head coach Chris Kleman told reporters, “There was no doubt in their minds about our teammates. “The way I got to and from a stage like this was pretty special.”

Wentz fractured his wrist in October and missed eight weeks in 2015, so the freshman’s Eastern stick stepped under center, leading the Bison to their fifth straight appearance in the FCS Championship Game in Frisco.
After Stick paced NDSU to an 8-0 record as a starter, Wentz returned from injury to face first overall Jacksonville State University in the title game on Jan. 9. The Bison started the game with four consecutive score drives and took a 5th in 37:10.
Wentz finished his last collegiate game 16/29 with a passing touchdown and two rush scores and was again named Most Valuable Player. He was selected #2 overall by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2016 NFL Draft three months later.
