Loyola Lacrosse Schedule 2023 – No. 2 Maryland men’s lacrosse took care of business in its season opener win over No. 20 Richmond. The Terps entered the year with some uncertainty after losing six of their 10 starters from 2022, but quickly put those concerns to bed.
Senior forward Daniel Maltz led the game with five points, adding two goals and three assists, while junior forward Owen Murphy scored a team-high four goals. Freshman forward Braden Erksa also had an impressive performance in his college debut, scoring two goals and an assist.

In 15 games, he compiled three goals, one assist, 31 ground balls and a team-high 27 caused turnovers. While not much of an offensive threat, Rezanka will make life difficult for Maryland’s forwards.
Evan James, senior midfielder, No. 8 – James finished right behind Poitras in points last season with 37, totaling 26 goals and 11 assists. James took a slight step back from his sophomore season — where he recorded 32 goals and 12 assists — but his play in 2022 still earned him a second-team All-Patriot League nod. With Poitras, Rezanka and Poitras all back, the Greyhounds should have a very good midfield.
Experience. Loyola’s biggest strength going into the 2023 season is its wealth of experience. The Greyhounds return six of their 10 starters from last year, all of whom are seniors. Despite having a disappointing 2022 campaign, Loyola’s core remains intact.

3. Can Loyola rebound? The Greyhounds were a staple among college lacrosse’s elite programs under Toomey, but they underachieved last year. Loyola finished the season with an 8-8 record and won just two of eight non-conference games. Every time No. 2 Maryland men’s lacrosse scored a goal, Loyola (Md.) immediately answered with one of its own.
After Loyola took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter, the Greyhounds matched the Terps through three quarters and held an 8-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Trying to spark Maryland’s offense, senior midfielder Jack Brennan passed to an unaware Owen Murphy. The ball bounced off Murphy’s chest and into the hands of Loyola, who immediately started a fast break.

As the defenders closed in, senior defensive midfielder Payton Rezanka threw the ball to Mustang senior defensive midfielder Sally, who fired it into the net.
Sally’s shot trickled through the feet of senior goalie Logan McNaney to give the Greyhounds their biggest lead of the game.
Loyola scored three more goals before the Terps scored one to defeat the defending national champions, 12-7, ending Maryland’s nearly three-year regular season winning streak on Saturday in Baltimore. Maryland hasn’t lost a game since the 2021 national championship.

Loyola senior midfielder Adam Poitras opened the scoring with a rocket into the back of the net. Poitras’ goal gave the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead and handed Maryland its first loss of the season.
Loyola senior quarterback Evan James ended the scoring drought with 2:30 left in the first quarter. With second baseman Colin Burlace in coverage, the Greyhounds ran an option play that gave James just enough room to charge and shoot the ball just past senior goalie Logan McNaney.

Down 2-0 as time wound down in the first quarter, the Terps desperately needed to score. Junior forward Daniel Kelly answered the call with 1:14 remaining when he drove past the Greyhound back lane and had a shot.
Loyola regained a two-goal lead early in the second quarter when junior midfielder Seth Higgins scored on a shot that went just past McNaney.
The Greyhounds’ two-goal lead didn’t make it into the second quarter, however, as Maryland’s offense picked up. The Terps completely erased the deficit within a minute, as Brennan and Kelly rattled in consecutive goals.

Then, with less than two minutes left in the first half, James fired a shot right past McNaney’s head.
Senior midfielder Kyle Long answered James’ goal with one of his own, but Loyola regained the lead before halftime when freshman Henry Haberman scored a last-second goal.
Senior forward Daniel Maltz scored the first goal of the second half, but Loyola refused to let the Terps gain any ground, scoring two unanswered goals in the next three minutes.

The two teams traded goals late in the third quarter, giving Loyola a two-goal lead heading into the fourth.
The Greyhounds didn’t let up in the final 15 minutes, scoring four straight goals en route to a 12-7 upset victory.
1. Loyola’s goalie questions were answered. Sam Shafer has been the Greyhounds’ starting goaltender the past three seasons, but when his eligibility ended, Loyola left a hole in net. Junior Luke Staudt was scheduled to start in place of Shafer, but his lack of experience left many questions to be answered. However, this quickly became a non-paying factor as Staudt was sharp from the first minute, finishing the match with 19 saves and allowing just seven goals in one of the best.
